Vegas NCAA Basketball Prediction: No 20 Saint Marys vs Loyola Marymount

Saint Marys Gaels seeks its 10th consecutive victory when it visits surprising Loyola Marymount Lions on Thursday. The No. 20 Gaels have won 17 of their last 18 games but figure to get a challenge from the Lions, who have won four of their last five games, including an impressive 14-point road victory at Brigham Young.

Loyola Marymount has beaten two ranked teams this season, notching non-conference victories over UCLA and Saint Louis. The Lions are fourth in the West Coast Conference and could tighten up the conference race with a victory. Saint Mary’s is 4-2 on the road.

Saint Marys Gaels (19-2, 8-0 WCC): Junior guard Matthew Dellavedova is the Gaels’ leading scorer (15.8 average) and an elite playmaker (6.5 assists), and senior forward Rob Jones is a double-double machine with 14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds. But sophomore guard Stephen Holt is the team’s unsung contributor and is a significant part of the success. Holt is shooting 52.2 percent from the field while averaging 10.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and a team-best 2.0 steals. Holt is shooting 66.1 percent in WCC play while making 13 of 23 3-point attempts. The Gaels allow only 59.9 points per game.

Loyola Marymount Lions (12-8, 5-2): Sophomore guard Anthony Ireland has been hot with three 20-point outings in four games and had 25 points in Monday’s victory over Santa Clara. Ireland had a 27-point outing against BYU two nights earlier and earned WCC Player of the Week honors. Ireland and senior forward Drew Viney share the team-scoring lead at 15.9 points per game. Junior forward Ashley Hamilton averages 12.5 points and junior guard Jarred DuBois is averaging 10.3. DuBois missed three straight games with a concussion before returning and playing 15 minutes against Santa Clara.
