The calendar turns from February to March this week, tightening the race towards the postseason. There are top-tier basketball betting matchups all week long, starting in Utah on Monday night.
- Boston Celtics at Utah Jazz
These two teams were active during the NBA’s trade deadline. The Utah Jazz surprised many by dealing point guard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets, getting back guard Devin Harris and rookie forward Derrick Favors. The Boston Celtics also shocked pundits with their trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, shipping center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson to OKC for forwards Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic.

Boston’s new additions made their debut in a 99-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night. The Celtics failed to cover as 8-point road favorites, bumping them to 1-2 against the NBA pointspreads during this four-game Western road trip. While Krstic is a seven-footer, he’s known more for his perimeter play than bruising inside. Boston’s trade leaves it very thin in the paint, especially with veteran centers Shaquille O`Neal and Jermaine O’Neal on the sideline with injuries.
Utah has had two games to revamp its offense after moving its top playmaker to New Jersey. Harris stepped into the starting lineup Saturday, scoring 17 points and dishing 12 assists in a 120-116 loss to the Detroit Pistons as a 5-point road favorite. That loss was the Jazz’s sixth defeat in the past seven games, dropping them to 2-5 ATS in that span. With new faces and a new head coach in Tyrone Corbin, Utah has plenty to sort out before Monday’s game.
- New York Knicks at Orlando Magic
The New York Knicks finish their three-game road trip against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. The Knicks, who were in South Beach playing the Miami Heat on Sunday, are one of the best road bets in the NBA. As of Sunday New York was 19-8-1 ATS away from the Big Apple but failed to win and cover in its last trip to Orlando.
The Magic defeated the Knicks 112-103 as 7.5-point home favorites back on December 30 – less than two weeks after their multi-player deal that brought in Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu. Since making those trades, Orlando is 21-12 and has covered the spread in 18 of those contests, including a 3-1 SU and ATS mark in their last four games heading into Sunday’s outing versus the Charlotte Bobcats.
New York is not the same team that lost to the Magic back in late December. The Knicks have added elite small forward Carmelo Anthony as well as veteran point guard Chauncey Billups, giving the team a scoring lift. Heading into Sunday’s game in Miami, Anthony has scored 27 points in his first two contests as a Knick. He dropped 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds the last time he faced Orlando, lifting the Denver Nuggets to a 111-94 win as 2-point home underdogs back on December 14.
- Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks
The Chicago Bulls head south, facing the Atlanta Hawks in the third installment of their current five-game road trip. The Bulls opened this swing with an 83-75 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks as 3.5-point faves Saturday and take on the Washington Wizards on Monday. Chicago has won six of its last seven games heading into Monday, posting an identical 6-1 record against the spread.
Derrick Rose continues to be the motor behind the Bulls, averaging just under 27 points per game in February, but the return of forward Joakim Noah gives Chicago a big boost under the basket. Noah, who had missed the majority of the season with a thumb injury, scored just eight points against the Bucks but pulled down 17 boards and blocked three shots. He’ll match up with former Florida teammate Al Horford for the first time this season on Wednesday. Last year, Chicago went just 1-4 SU and ATS versus Atlanta.
The Hawks wrap up an extended seven-game road trip before hosting the Bulls. Atlanta was in Portland on Sunday and makes the trip to Denver on Monday before having just one day to recover before playing their third game in four nights. New point guard Kirk Hinrich will get more familiar with his teammates after putting up eight points and three assists in just over 16 minutes in his Atlanta debut Friday. The Hawks have struggled against the spread at home this season, posting a negative copy of their 17-9 SU record in Philips Arena, including going 0-3 ATS in their last four games as hosts.
